The Week Begins and (last) Week's End

Week’s End is on! Oh…but wait, it’s time for The Week Begins. I know! We’ll fuse them! Yes I once again apologize for a lack of Week’s End on the weekend, but I’ll put it at the end of this The Week Begins and there we go. Now on to this week’s comics before we look at the last week.

The Amazing Spider-man #605 *Most Anticipated*
Written: Fred Van Lente and Brian Reed
Art: Various

I’m hopeful that this issue does a good job clearing up the loose ends of Red Headed Stranger since it’s the epilogue. With a 3.99 price tag and 3 stories to tell my best guess is this will show us what MJ has been up to these last few years she’s been gone from New York, how she knows Peter is Spider-man (Yes, it was revealed last week that she knows) and the third story…I got nothing.

My own theory is that MJ and Peter where going to get married, but on the day before the wedding Peter got beat up real bad as Spider-man. Now up to this point they would have retconned MJ ever finding out Peter was Spider-man and this is how she finds out and she’s pissed he never told her so she calls off the wedding. That or she just gets mad that he was gone and doesn’t marry him.

With all that said I’m really hopeful for this issue as it seems like Spider-man has finally returned to a level of quality that I haven’t seen in quite a few years.

Batman: Streets of Gotham #4
Written: Paul Dini
Art: Dustin Nguyen

Another comic I’m excited for, Streets of Gotham has been building to being one of the best comics out there and I doubt this issue will be any different. My only worry is that Dini is taking on a lot of plotlines and if he doesn’t start resolving some of them to make room for others then the book could get disjointed and cluttered. Still it’s been an excellent read so far and I can’t see why it wouldn’t be this time.

Batman and Robin #4
Written: Grant Morrison
Art: Phillip Tan

Last issue sold me on the series as it was a satisfying read even with it’s flaws. Though what really got me was the awesome cliff-hanger with Red Hood who I’m really excited to see here along with his side-kick. I’m also really hopeful that Morrison gives us another solid balance of character moments and action.

Though the real attraction to this arc other then the villain is the artwork by Phillip Tan who did a phenomenal job on one of my all time favorite comics Spawn: Godslayer. I heard mixed things on his recent run on Green Lantern but I’m positive that he’ll do a killer job here with Batman and I’m really excited to see how this comic looks.

Blackest Night #3
Written: Geoff Johns
Art: Ivan Reis

My excitement for this issue isn’t too big. While I am hopeful that Johns can reinvigorate the excitement he filled with last issue I can’t deny that after a slower pace last issue definitely got me worried about this series. I don’t want another Secret Invasion on my hands, I suffered through that 8 issue waste of money already.

Still I have confidence that Johns can win me back as too much has been building up to this just to go at a snails pace for what’s supposed to be DC’s big mega epic event of the year.

Mighty Avengers #29
Written: Dan Slott and Christos Gage
Art: Koi Pham

I can’t honestly say I’m excited at all about this series. One minute Slott is blowing me away with a great read the next he’s boring me with inane dialogue and useless action that serves no interesting purpose or is good at all. Still I remain hopeful he can save this floundering series by the end of this arc as things should soon start to get really crazy.

Week’s End has been taking a break and to be fair so have I. With school back in session for me it’s an annoying transition but that hopefully shouldn’t get in the way of things any longer. Also I’m going to stick to the 3 original part of Week’s End for this one time and not add any of the other recent add-ons.

A warning there will be spoilers for Dark Reign: Young Avengers #4 in this.

Comic of the Week: Dark Reign: Young Avengers #4

This week had some excellent reads but I have to give it to the most full and amazing read for me. This issue blew me away and impressed on so many levels. One of the few comics that really feels worth the 3.99 price tag nowadays. One thing I have to say is if you are a big Young Avengers fan like myself then do not miss out on this mini. For me it’s both an amazing mini and the best of the Dark Reign mini’s.

Moment of the Week: the real Dark Avengers

A great way to end a solid issue. Cornell left me satisfied with what I got as well as excited for more making this my moment of the week. Combined with Brooks’ amazing art and it would be hard not to give this moment the win. Also I must say I am curious to see how this pans out next time if the final chapter will be an all out brawl or not.

Cover of the Week: the Amazing Spider-man #604 by Lienel Yu

Some good covers this week but I’ve got to give it to Yu for this dynamic image. I think this isn’t the first cover like this we’ve seen but adding it to the image of MJ in the background just really works and it’s a strong image that catches my attention well.

Comic Reviews for September 10th 2009

Comic reviews, yes! Sadly this is the last day of Summer. Kiss my freedom from the chains of education goodbye. But lets celebrate Summer with 4 great comics.

Also if you want my first opinions on comics before I write up reviews every time I get my comics I do a Comic Rundown on my Twitter. So if you want my first opinion before I post the reviews then my Twitter is where to get them.

Now let’s start the reviews!

Witchblade #130
Written: Ron Marz
Art: Stjepan Sejic

Opening Comments: Despite War of the Witchblades being a weak storyline mostly through it seems Marz finally gave us the payoff we’ve been waiting for in giving us an absolutely awesome read. Of course he gave us some amazing twists along the way.

Story Comments: So the gist of this issue has little action really. Dani is saved by the Angelus using Finch’s body but rather then just saving her Dani becomes the Angelus’ new host and it’s an amazing twist, even if it was hinted at.

I love this twist for the character as it means she’s in for more exciting and interesting things all the while retaining her well developed character. Marz made a brilliant move here and it paid off big with all this development making Dani’s character retain her greatness as well as give her a new status that I’m excited to see fleshed out.

Of course it was spoiled that Sara is still with bearer of the Witchblade but I’m not complaining when she’s such a great character. Also it seems like she made nice with Gleason which leaves me hopeful for them.

Really the only fault I have is there was little action but with such great twists I can forgive that we got so few action moments in this story. This is one of those stories where the end justifies the means at how great the ending was even with the majority of the story being too slow.

All the development paid off and this was an incredible read. Character work was excellent and the plotting was amazing as well. One of the best issues of Witchblade yet and that’s saying something.

Art Comments: Of course Sejic delivers big once again and does an amazing job. What more can I say? Well I did like the design of Dani as the new Angelus and Sejic balances what action we do get with strong page design as well as great emotion conveyed through the story.

Final Comments: While this story arc in the long run wasn’t all that great, it at least had a strong ending issue and at this point it’s like a godsend and boosts Witchblade back up as one of the best comics out there.

Must Have

The Amazing Spider-man #604
Written: Fred Van Lente
Art: Barry Kitson

Opening Comments: Despite a very so-so story arc it seems that Red Headed Stranger saved the best for last as all the build up has been great. My only real problems with this issue is that the story arc has mere nothing to do with MJ returning.

Story Comments: We finally see Chameleon’s endgame put in to action as he plans to turn New York into the next Fallout 3 look alike. Spider-man fights the new Spider-slayers and all that jazz but what really makes this issue work is the character moments not the actual plot.

Action was solid for the most part and I did like the way Spider-man is able to have the Slayers work with him to stop the bomb. It was all great but what makes this work in the long run is the aftermath of Chameleon’s bomb.

My favorite moment had to be JJJ getting scolded by his deputy mayor. Finally putting him in his place about how he can’t keep going after Spider-man. The Spider-slayers retiring, etc. It was a strong moment and it was exactly what needed to happen.

I’m hopeful this means things are finally looking up for Spider-man but there’s no way to be sure. Seems he’s finally out of the fire but we all know that Spider-man will be feeling that sizzling tingle at his feet sooner or later.

I did like Peter and MJ finally meeting up. It seems there was some hinting that MJ/Harry are going out or that MJ now doesn’t want to date Peter. Also I was really happy we didn’t get the typical cliff-hanger of MJ saying she knows Peter’s secret or some crap like that.

Our cliff-hanger seems to be something that will tie in to a larger developing story. I was glad to see that Chameleon is far from out of the game as this revamp of his character has been absolutely excellent.

I was glad to see that there was some consequence from Chameleon seducing Michelle. She now thinks Peter is her boyfriend and this should be hilarious to watch unfold in the next issue.

Overall this story was great and the final part was the best. Character work is excellent and it leaves me with a good feeling which is something Spider-man hasn’t been able to do in a long time.
Art Comments: Kitson does a strong job but sadly there really isn’t much I can say. He does a good job and that’s it. Strong and enjoyable artwork but also rather plain.

Final Comments: It feels good to be a Spider-man fan again which is something I never though I could say. While this arc had little to do with MJ and her return, no doubt the arc’s biggest weakness, it was still a fun read.

Must Read

Dark Reign: Young Avengers #4
Written: Paul Cornell
Art: Mark Brooks

Opening Comments: I love Young Avengers, I’ve been enjoying the Dark Reign status quo, therefore a Young Avengers mini-series dealing in the Dark Reign status quo sounds like a no brainer. Luckily it seems Cornell has taken the series’ simple concepts and added an extra amount of awesome turning this into one of the best mini’s of the year so far.

Story Comments: We open with an attempt to prove Hawkeye and Kate are not the same person. Vision is impersonating her as they chase the Purple Man through one of Kate’s party. A simple moment but what makes it work so well is afterwards Vision offers to use Kate’s body design alone with Cassie. That made me burst into laughter. I loved it.

We pick up with the splitting of the teams. Melter isn’t happy that Enchantress and Coat of Arms are the only people going to the regular Young Avengers and rightfully so. It goes bad but the dialogue is so tense and it works well. It’s as if I’m sitting there watching this happening, wondering what’s going to happen next.

We see that Melter, as a child when he first got his powers melted his parents. Tough break I know. Could be work, you could have stepped in the melted bod-…oh wait, he did. Never mind.

So Melter calls Norman Osborn only for Coat of Arms to catch him. We also get a moment telling us that Enchantress was created by Loki. Coat basically berates him for not doing what she wanted. It’s another intense but great moment that works well with how developed these characters are.

One thing that really confused me from this issue was Enchantress…seducing Wiccan? (again, a case of “wanna f***?”) it was not sure if it really happens. She tries and he says he’s gay but she doesn’t care. The next thing she’s kicked off the team. It’s really jarring and confusing and it felt rather out of place to show us she’s a slut. I don’t get it or how was it important.

What made it even more confusing was she still wants to be with Melter. My head was spinning at this point as I can’t tell what’s going on with her character. It’s one big mystery that seems it will finally get solved by the mini’s end.

I did like seeing Executioner kill Princess Python just because she never told him. It was epic and if anything it shows that Executioner is a cold monster and turns him into a more credible villain.

Of course we get a nice moment between Stature and Vision that is interrupted by Egghead. More great character work with some cool action put in for a moment.

What really got me in the end and made this even more awesome was the ending cliff-hanger. The Young Masters and the Dark Avengers teaming up to take down the Young Avengers. It should be an epic fight and it left me pumped and excited for next time.

Overall this issue was excellent and the best issue so far of this great mini. Leaving me excited for more next time as well as satisfied with what I got.

Art comments: I can assume the delay for this issue was on Mark Brooks since most delays are on the artists. I can forgive him though as this comic looks absolutely amazing and this continues to be Brooks’ best artistic performance yet.

Final Comments: If you are a Young Avengers fan then it’s not too late. Go pick up all the prior issues of this mini along with this one. Don’t miss out on what to me is the best of the Dark Reign mini’s.

Dead Space: Extraction One-Shot
Written: Antony Johnston
Art: Ben Templesmith

Opening Comments: Lucky for me I got the last copy of Extraction on the shelves. While this issue didn’t turn out to be the exciting Dead Space prequel that I was hoping for it had strong narration and awesome artwork.

Story Comments: Not a lot to say about this one. Nicole, the girlfriend Isaac has been looking for through the entire Dead Space video game tells her story of how she was onboard the Ishimura as everything goes to hell.

Not a lot really happens, Nicole gets onboard, the Necromorphs soon show up and while she does develop an anti-virus it’s too late to save any body and we end with her leaving the logs to Isaac that he finds in the game.

Johnston does a good job with what little space he as in a one-shot giving us some good chilling moments and cool gore just as the Dead Space series is known for. Also we get Nicole fleshed out nicely to where she finally feels like a more interesting and important character.

Though as I said there isn’t a lot to say. It’s a short read even with the strong narration. Not a lot of major stuff happens and the ending pretty much leaves us off with the knowledge that Nicole is dead. Something we figure by Dead Space’s end.

So really not much I can say. An enjoyable read, solid as can be and some good narration but not much more.

Art Comments: one complaint I have for the art is most of it is in the dark. We don’t get a lot of background work and while I can understand that the majority of the background work is just the same thing over and over. Still Templesmith brings his usual great work here and does great job with the chilling Necromorphs.

Final Comments: Dead Space fans like myself will appreciate Nicole being fleshed out more. Still if you don’t like the games or their mythos I can’t really give a solid reason to pick this up. Mostly for Dead Space fans only.

The Week Begins - September 7th 2009 and Cartoon Review

Apologies for yet another missing Week’s End, I haven’t been very well. I knew if I tried to write one up it would have been short and boring and I’d rather not give you guys sub-par crap. Though I will this time add my cartoon review at the end of this.

We’ve got a pretty good looking week of comics, even with dropping Ultimate Avengers sadly I’m still pretty excited as it seems all the reads this week will be solid.

Witchblade #130 *Most Anticipated*
Written: Ron Marz
Art: Stjepan Sejic

While War of the Witchblades has been a weak story arc mostly, last issue was a return to form for the series and was much closer to the awesome read Witchblade has been over the last year I’ve been reading it. Making me hopeful that Marz can close this story arc well enough.

Sadly it was spoiled that Sara is still the bearer of the Witchblade with the solicit for #132, but I’m still hopeful that Marz can do a great job closing what has been a weak story. Also excited to see how it all pans out. Should be a great read.

The Amazing Spider-man #604
Written: Fred Van Lente
Art: Barry Kitson

While the red-headed stranger story arc has had it’s good and it’s bad moments I remain hopeful for this issue to conclude the story as well as next week’s epilogue to it all. I’m sure it will be a good read as Van Lente is doing a solid job. Though not really much to say as I’m hopeful Chameleon hasn’t ruined Peter’s life totally. Seems that if this story arc has any real major effect that Peter will be out on his own and MJ and him is never going to happen.

Dark Reign: Young Avengers #4
Written: Paul Cornell
Art: Mark Brooks

Despite a delay I remain excited to read this. This comic seems to be the best of the Dark Reign tie-in comics so far as last issue really won me over and impressed me. I’m hopeful that Cornell and Brooks continue to impress with the penultimate chapter of what so far has been a great read.

Dead Space: Extraction One-Shot
Written: Antony Johnston
Art: Ben Templesmith

For those unaware I am a huge Dead Space fan, I loved the first game, the first comic series and I seriously need to rent the animated movie sometime soon but I’ve been lazy about it. Seeing Johnston and Templesmith team up again for this one shot is great. I will probably pick it up on the shelf if it’s available when I get to the LCS.

My only real worry is that this is based around Isaac’s girlfriend Nicole. A minor character who was Isaac’s main driving force through the entire first game which I liked but at the same time I’m not sure she really deserves a whole one-shot comic devoted to her.

Cartoon Review
Wolverine and the X-men Episode 19: Guardian Angel

Another one character driven episode, though at least this one wasn’t all on Wolverine. This episode shows Angel as he finally confronts his father and in the process gets his wings removed and turns to Sinister to get them back. Sinister turns him in to Archangel.

Truth be told I was disappointed that we’re already seeing Archangel. I half expected this to happen some time around the 2nd or maybe even 3rd season but to give the character such a huge alteration in the first season seemed like a really bad idea to me.

Still this episode was a strong watch at least. Mostly for how the story pulls on our heart strings as we see Storm and the others suffer Warren’s bad choice. Though I think the most powerful moment was Warren’s father (the 2nd Warren) grieving at the very end of the episode.

One thing I definitely liked was the action this time around. So far the action of this series has been mixed. Last episode for example was very boring with how it repeated the pattern of X-men in trouble, X-men get out of trouble, over and over again in the fight. Here the fight between Wolverine and Archangel was very well done.

I also liked Wolverine trying to convince Archangel not to kill his father. Going on about how Wolverine was turned into a monster whereas Warren can be saved. It was a great moment and one of the few times where Wolverine felt like an important character but not because he was hogging the spotlight from others.

I liked Storm’s relationship with Angel. While we’re never told if it’s an actual dating relationship we know that because of the fact they can fly they have a special bond and it was really interesting. It was also sad to see how it affected her and you felt bad both for her and Warren.

This episode was a nice mix of the ongoing plot with the MRD and past developments all the while being an enjoyable episode on it’s own. While I’m hopeful that next time we can return to more important plots the character work and moments where some of the best so far of the young series.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Review

Looking back on my retrospective of Batman in video games it’s a sad fact that the Dark Knight has been done a dishonor in the world of video games. While we’ve gotten a couple of OK to good games over the years there has never been an honest experience that makes you feel like Batman and you would think it wouldn’t be that hard to pull off, especially in this age of video games.

Rocksteady studios seems determined to give players the experience they’ve been yearning for years and I’d have to say they’ve done their job and went above and beyond with Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Now a warning before you read on, there will be spoilers for the game such as it’s boss fights and the main story. There are tons of great moments that I would really hate to spoil for you, so for each part that isn’t spoiler free it will have normal text on the title, spoiler-ific aspects will be in red. I seriously warn you not to read any of the spoilers if you have yet to play through all this game.

A final note before we get to the review, I have the Playstation 3 version but I don’t think there are any major differences between the two versions. Also I haven’t downloaded the play as Joker challenge maps but maybe I’ll review those another time.

The Story

I figured I should mention this part first since the very first thing that caught my attention about this game was that Paul Dini would be writing it. It’s no secret nowadays that Paul Dini wrote for the Emmy winning Batman: the Animated Series, as well as it’s continuation in the New Adventures of Batman and Batman Beyond.

With that I was really excited to see what Dini would give us and I was not disappointed. Dini takes what could have been a very boring simple story and gives it some nice twists and fills it with tons of great character moments and solid dialogue. Never was there a moment of dialogue that bugged me or felt silly or dumb like most video game dialogue nowadays.

While the story starts off simple it evolves when we find out that Joker is using an enhanced version of Venom (not the black goo that bonds to people and eats arms) the drug that made Bane so powerful. He paid a doctor to work on it and he plans to use the new formula called “Titan” to create a personal army of super-soldiers to take over Gotham with.

Okay, okay…it’s a little on the silly side I guess. It’s more something Joker would have done in the old Adam West TV show but Dini gives it that flare to where it doesn’t feel like a dumb idea and becomes a legitimate threat for Batman to stop it. Also it gives the player a larger sense of urgency now that Batman isn’t just fighting to save Arkham, he’s fighting to save Gotham itself.

Also the setting allows for plenty of Batman’s rogues to pop up such as Scarecrow and Killer Croc which was great to see all these villains here. While I would have loved to see Dini write Mr. Freeze into this game I can live without it since we get great characters and each is written well.

Despite the silly plot of Joker trying to take over Gotham I still loved this story. Dini writes it all very well and as I mentioned the dialogue is amazingly well. I especially liked Joker and Oracle’s voices as both their back and forth talks with Batman are well done and you get a great sense into both characters even though they are all far away.

I especially liked the psychological twist to this story and game. I’m not sure if this was Dini or the developer’s who thought to do this but either way it works brilliantly well. This only happens before a Scarecrow fight but Batman will be seeing hallucinations from the Fear Toxin as he walks along. He’ll see his parents begging him to save them as corpses, he turns back into a child for a bit and overhears Gordon talking to another cop about his parent’s death and there is even a brief moment where you control Joker as he and Batman switch roles for a few minutes.

I don’t know why developers didn’t think to do something like this before. There is always a psychological undertone to Batman so to add it to a video game and take such creative twists was brilliant and should have happened a lot sooner.

Overall the story is very well written, the characters are incredibly well written, and this game has an exciting and very engrossing story that will no doubt appeal to Batman fans.

Game Play

There are several different things to mention about the Gameplay of Arkham Asylum. I’ll start out with how it all controls. Controls are very solid with things like running, accessing gadgets and combat all easy to get used to. You can pick this up and within seconds you should be able to do well at it and kick ass.

Combat is called free-flow combat, a perfect way to describe it as everything flows amazing well. It’s very easy to fight enemies but it’s not simple beat ‘em up where you just beat the tar out of the enemies and are done. You have to keep an eye on what’s going on, pressing the triangle button if an enemy is about to attack so you can counter. If it weren’t for the counter attack then this would have been much more frustrating.

Combat flows amazingly well and you can see the extra touch to make it look like this is how Batman would fight. Just the way he moves feels exactly like this is how Batman would fight as it adds the martial arts mastery that he has and throws in use of his gadgets very well.

One complaint I have with combat are the enemies who use electrical batons. Now while on their own they are an easy threat but if you are fighting one of these guys as they are surrounded by several of their friends it’s much more frustrating as you have to use the Batclaw to disarm them but it’s easy for one of their friends to get in the way making it much harder.

Near the end of fighting a group of enemies the game slows down for the final blow to the final enemy. It’s oh so satisfying as is hearing the bones break with every brutal punch and kick, really putting you into the combat experience.

One thing that confused me is the Lunatic enemies that are introduced after you rescue the Warden. They are much weaker than the Black gate prisoners and can be taken down with one punch then a ground takedown. While they can take punch after punch if you don’t do the ground takedown the second you realize that it’s a minor annoyance.

I can’t see why the Lunatics where the earlier enemies with the Black gate prisoners as later on enemies as the Black gate guys are much tougher. Also the Lunatics are never in groups so you never have to worry about being ganged up on by them.

A minor complaint is that Batman easily gets caught on things like chairs that you may not notice when running through the halls, so suddenly Batman will stop and you won’t know why. It’s not a major problem but it is odd.

Detective Mode is something you can always access even in the middle of a fight which is helpful. Basically you can see in an inferred type vision. Usually you just use it to find things like openings and even Riddler trophies. This is also helpful in pointing out things like maps and Patient Interview tapes that you may not notice so well the first time through a room. I recommend that for every room you at least turn on Detective Mode for a moment and scan around, though don’t make the mistake of always keeping it on or you’ll miss out on a lot of the detail of this game.

Detective Mode is also used to track people down such as Jim Gordon by trails of his tobacco. This was a brilliant twist and it plays up heavily to the great Detective Batman. It was fun following a trail and really cool just seeing where it all leads.

A key element is stealth in this game, using Detective Mode you can see armed enemies and will have to take a silent approach to taking them out. This is really fun and really puts you in the fact that you are Batman, just a man in a Bat suit who is vulnerable to guns. I was glad that I couldn’t go in batarangs a blazing and clearing a room in a matter of seconds. Actually taking down enemies silently really put me in the sense of being Batman and it was tons of fun, if not a little nerve racking even.

Larger enemies like the titans are a little annoying to fight when they are joined by regular enemies. Luckily you can use them to take out the smaller guys which is one of the more exciting moments of combat.

Design

As I mentioned you don’t want to have Detective Mode on too much or you’ll miss out on some of the better details in this game. Clearly a lot of time and hard work was put into making Arkham Asylum an incredible looking game as there is such an incredible attention to detail even in the most basic of enemy designs.

There is still a psychological element outside of story moments as the atmosphere can be generally creepy and tensions can rise. Especially when you delve deeper into parts like the sewer or the spots that house the Lunatics. It’s honestly creepy and an exciting moment that has the player on the edge of their seat as what will happen next.

There are lots of touches of Gothic architecture that follow the deep history of the Asylum where you have to navigate through some creepier areas. It’s also a nice touch in to adding how playing in Arkham is a really cool experience that fits the Batman experience well.

One big complaint I have is that it’s easy to get a little lost at times in the Asylum. While most of the time the game follows a fairly linear path I can’t deny that I’ve gotten completely lost and ran all a round an area looking for the next objective only to realize I missed the path or should have just left the area at the time.

Now luckily this problem only pops up once in a blue moon and there where very few times I was generally aggravated with where I was supposed to go. Luckily there are times where the map is very useful, but it can also be confusing when you’re next area is on a lower level but you went to a higher level already so you can’t find it.

One thing that rather caught me off guard was the upgrade system. You earn Experience Points, or XP where you can use it to upgrade certain things about Batman such as his armor or his weapons. I personally recommend you take care of the Armor upgrades first thing because that extra health can really come in handy during the more dragged out and difficult encounters.

One complaint I do have with the upgrade system is the ability to take down enemies from a gargoyle is an upgrade rather than just a natural ability Batman can do. I can understand that things like enhancing weapons have to be upgraded or new combo moves but this was a bad choice for an upgrade as this should have been an ability right away from when you start the game.

Now there’s more to Arkham than getting around and beating up enemies, you also can go on Riddler’s little Easter egg hunt and track down things such as Riddler trophies and Riddler maps. Also you can find Character Bio’s and my personal favorite are the patient interviews where characters like Poison Ivy, Zsasz and Killer Croc get fleshed out a bit more and they are very interesting.

While all this stuff is optional it’s hard not to want to find every trophy, interview and map in the game as it’s very satisfying especially when you hear Riddler mock you even if you’ve found a trophy or solved a riddle. That being said I myself wasn’t too interested in solving riddles, finding the trophies is much more rewarding and a fun challenge.

The Gadgets

Batman has several gadgets at his disposal. You start with the Batarang then gather things such as explosive gel, the Batclaw (which is later turned to the Ultra Batclaw) and a zip line that helps you cross large gaps. All useful and even the remote controlled Batarang can be very satisfying to use.

While at first it is a bit annoying to see moments early on where you need explosive gel or the Batclaw but you’ll have to run back to do them and get the Riddler trophies or other bonuses waiting for you. It is a tad frustrating.

It’s hard to say what the best gadget is, off the top of my head I like the device that allows you to unlock locked up rooms by using frequencies. It feels like something Batman would use and is very cool to use especially how it utilizes the analogue sticks.

Overall the gadget are a crucial part of this game and I was very happy to see the designers make sure that every gadget has plenty of usefulness to the game and is prominent.

Characters/Boss fights/Character Designs

I want to cover a few characters such as Batman, Jim Gordon, Oracle, Joker, Harley Quinn and some of the Arkham staff before I talk about the boss fights. I’ll cover all the boss fights so you know so again; don’t let me spoil it for you!

Batman is voiced by longtime voice actor Kevin Conroy who does an amazing job here. While this isn’t his first time voicing Batman or a video game this is definitely one of his best performances in a long time. He does an incredible job delivering the lines and even simple things like the sound Batman makes when striking or when he’s talking to Oracle or himself. Every line is delivered incredibly well.

Oracle is only heard in Batman’s ear but she’s so well done that you would swear she was right next to him helping. I’m not sure who does her voice acting but she does an incredible job on bringing out good lines and giving us a great feel for her character.

Jim Gordon is his usual solid character though really half the time he’s either getting captured or shot at so I can’t say much about him.

Joker is voiced by Mark Hamill and while this may be a controversial thing to say to Joker fans everywhere, by far of all the people who have done Joker in live action and animation I think Mark Hamill is the very best of all the performers. Yes, even better then Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger.

Here the Joker is his usual crazy self, spouting dark and witty humor like he always had but one thing I love most about Hamill’s performance as the Clown prince of Crime is that he’s able to balance the whimsical thief with the dark and violent monster just beneath the surface of that make up. Here his work is no different as he’s able to do a great job delivering silly one liners and changing to cold and angry.

Harley Quinn is voiced by Arleen Sorkin the same voice she’s had since she first appeared in Batman: the animated series and it works very well. While I can’t honestly say I like her psycho nurse outfit, at least they kept the theme of Black and White from her original costume so I can’t complain a lot. Also she still sounds like her crazy self that so many people have come to love to make her a fan favorite character.

Poison Ivy has a major role near the end of the game but there really isn’t a lot I can say about her character. I do like her redesign for the most part, it combines the green villain that she is along with that seductress aspect that has always been essential to her character and it’s a solid design.

There are other characters like Bane and Killer Croc that have some good moments but really I can’t say a lot about them as these characters serve mostly just for a simple boss fight and they don’t get much else.

My favorite of all the redesigns has to be Scarecrow. Now I’ll mention more about his boss fights later but damn his design is so freaky and cool. It blends some of the simplicity of a man in tattered clothes like an old scarecrow along with a weird Fred Krueger type glove of Fear Toxin along with a cool gas mask that moves hauntingly with his words as he speaks.

Now as for the staff of Arkham. Again there isn’t a lot I can say but I must admit that characters like Dr. Young and the security officer Cash are well developed to where hearing them talk is at least interesting and worth my time. They are given some good moments and they do tie into the more important characters at least.

Now for the boss fights. The first official boss fight is with a Titan prototype and it is boring as all hell. You smack him around a bit and dodge him and it’s over within seconds.

All 3 encounters with the Scarecrow are amazing. It’s like entering Silent Hill or something as Batman’s nightmares come alive and he enters a chilling world of fear. Now it’s not so much a fight as it is avoiding being seen by Scarecrow’s large gaze and platforming your way to the Bat signal and shining it on him to defeat him. Though this is such an exciting change of pace that I absolutely loved it. It also fits in very well to that psychological element of Batman.

Bane’s fight is fairly typical as you Batarang his face enough to make him crash into a wall all the while avoiding Joker’s goons and taking him out. Not a great fight, just an okay one but it ends with an awesome scene that feels like Batman finally getting payback for when Bane snapped his back so long ago.

I can’t say I liked the Harley Quinn boss fight since you don’t even fight Harley! This was a horrible design choice by the developers that rather then actually fighting Harley you beat up a bunch of goons in 2 different rooms, then we get a cut scene of Batman beating Harley. It was really frustrating that all the build up to you finally going head to head with Harley was nothing more than a simple brawl.

My least favorite of all the fights was the one with Killer Croc where you basically walk around a maze of floating platforms looking for hanging green sacs to cut down and take spores from. Croc himself never fights you and even when he pops up you just quick batarang him down and you’re done.

It’s a really tedious boring moment made even more tedious by the fact that you cant’ run and since it’s a maze rather than a linear path it’s incredibly easy to circle the same platforms 10 times in a row. I will give it credit at least that it has an awesome ending that ties in to the fact that Batman is always prepared and anticipates everything.

Second favorite to the Scarecrow moments is the fight with Poison Ivy. Now it’s a tricky fight as you’ve got to watch her attacks, dodge the guards under her control and try and hit her with plenty of batarangs to take her down. While it’s a fairly simple fight it’s a great challenge.

I must admit I really was disappointed with the final fight. While it was a cool twist that Joker takes the Titan and Batman refuses to give in to the Titan to be on an equal level with Joker rather than a simple cool fight Joker goes up and waits around as his goons fight you. It’s a total bullshit idea and really is nothing but a tedious fight waiting for Joker to get distracted so you can drag him back down and give him the proper beating he deserves.

Still while the boss fights where all mixed experiences I must admit I did still have a lot of fun with the better ones such as Scarecrow and Ivy.

Final Thoughts

If you have PS3 or 360 you owe it to yourself to pick up this game. It’s a unique experience that really makes you feel like you are Batman. Even with it’s flaws the good totally outweighs the bad and makes for an incredible experience that no Batman fan or gamer should ever miss out on.

Comic Reviews - September 3rd 2009

Apologies for the delayed comic reviews, I was busy all day yesterday after I got home and even as I speak I’m still busy. But I know that I need to get these reviews done for today since tomorrow I’ll be posting my review of Batman: Arkham Asylum. With only 2 comics to review this week there isn’t a lot to say but still 2 good reads.

Ultimate Comics Spider-man #2
Written: Brian Bendis
Art: David Lafuente

Opening Comments: After a disappointing debut issue I was hopeful that Bendis could finally win me over with chapter 2 of the latest installment of Ultimate Spider-man. While the art was top notch and some of the best art that the series has seen in years I must admit that with zero answers Bendis had started Ultimate spider-man off on the wrong foot and that he needed to work fast to save the series from oblivion. Luckily it seems that while answers are probably never going to come, at least we can still get a solid fun read.

Story Comments: the highlight of this issue are the villains the Bombshells, a mother daughter team that when they are next to each other have explosive powers. Bendis works fast at giving them a unique and fun voice that makes them great additions of the villain cast, even if they are a bit on the silly side.

That was the high point, everything else? Middle of the road to annoying. Let’s get all the bad points out of the way first thing so I can mention how frustrating they where. My biggest complaint is MJ. Sure she gets more then one page, but only one page of actual dialogue and what we get seems to point that MJ is now a shy little girl afraid of everything and even some human contact.

Now I could understand if they explained the Ultimatum changed MJ, made her a different person and that she was now reserved and afraid of the world. If they explained it I could understand, after all disasters can have those kinds of effects on people. In fact it could be a great psychological character twist. But there is the problem, they don’t explain it. For all we know MJ is just feeling shy for no reason. Since she gets no page time we have no way of knowing why she’s acting this way and it’s very frustrating that once such an important character to the comic is now shoved aside for no real reason.

Kong for whatever reason has been changed and again, this is not explained why. I hate the redesign of Punk Kong as it is, but at least explain why he’s this way. I would think that Bendis is aware by now of storytelling 101 and that you can’t just change a character dramatically and not explain it. That’s a basic idea and seeing Bendis gloss over these things is incredibly frustrating.

I continued to be creeped out and dislike the Peter/Gwen relationship, but what bugs me even more is that Bendis is trying to play them off as a really cute and sweet couple when really it just seems so forced. Nothing about this relationship feels general and interesting. It’s just like 2 best friends saying their a couple so they don’t look lonely or something.

Also I hated the cliff-hanger, it’s just Johnny Storm waking up. How exciting. Maybe next time we can end with Mysterio sleeping in his lair or Spider-man and Gwen napping in a web. It’s just so thrilling after all.

Now for some positives, I really dig Ultimate Mysterio. His dialogue is, while not overly exciting, still pretty good and Bendis is fleshing him out as a more credible threat then the 616 version ever was. I’m hopeful that he’ll stick around as a main villain through the series.

This is a problem that Ultimate Spider-man has always had but the pacing is weak as all hell. Not only are we not getting any damn answers as to why there where such critical changes to the characters but this story is moving at a snail’s pace. I’m not even sure what the opening arc’s objective is. Bendis is really taking too much time to try and hook the readers in and is losing me.

As I mentioned I love the Bombshells, their so wacky and funny that they work so well with Bendis’ style of humor. While it was annoying trying to understand what Lori, the daughter was saying through all the censorship I still really liked the characters. I’m hopeful that they show up from time to time even if they aren’t real threats.

My 2nd favorite moment is Kitty suffering from discrimination for being a mutant. Everyone is against her but Kong it seems and it’s really sad but at the same time interesting to read. Bendis does a good job of making us feel bad for Kitty and wishing we could throw a wall of French fries back at flash. Also Kitty’s reaction to getting detention for using her powers was a frustrating moment for her and the reader, proving that the old Mutant Discrimination can still be compelling as ever for readers.

We get our usual serving of Bendis speak, nothing new here but as usual it works much better in Ultimate Spider-man than it ever did in comics like New or Mighty Avengers. If anything his writing here is some of his most solid dialogue ever. Though again the dialogue between Peter/Gwen felt awkward and forced.

Still for as negative as I was in this review I can’t deny that this issue showed signs of improvement for the new volume of Ultimate Spider-man and Bendis has convinced me to stick along a bit longer and see what happens next.

Art Comments: Lafuente continues to impress as Ultimate Comics Spider-man is now one of the best looking comics on the market. While I mentioned previously that his manga inspired art may not click well with some readers I think that now he’s moved beyond the obvious inspiration and his gorgeous art is great enough to handle it’s own and not bother people who don’t like manga influence in their comics.

Final Comments: Ultimate Comics Spider-man has a lot against it, but somehow it manages to overcome it’s problems and still be a fun read with incredible artwork that I give recommendations for. Just don’t expect any answers anytime soon sadly.

Jersey Gods #7
Written: Glen Brunswick
Art: Dan McDaid

Opening Comments: Jersey Gods has been strong series over the last several months and the latest issue is no different. Well, sadly it is a bit weaker then previous installments but it’s still a strong and enjoyable read.

Story Comments: the plot takes place with Barock and Helius enjoying their new jobs as fashion models for Delia. They are in Paris and Zoe is enjoying herself. Barock stops some terrorists and Zoe goes on about how he’s the most perfect man ever to exist in the history of men.

I really liked the first few pages that we mostly see in the preview, this was definitely the highlight of the comic and the most fun I had reading it. We got some good blend of Super Hero and Romantic Comedy, it was great and Brunswick continues to have a good grasp on things.

The one weak point to this comic is the conversation Barock has with Delia. It’s a rather pointless moment and while Brunswick tries hard to make it funny, it just doesn’t do anything for me. It’s the one moment in the comic that I was relived to be over and while we did get some glimpses of comedy in there for the most part it was just weird and felt very out of place. That’s saying a lot for a character as weird as Delia.

Things pick up again when the villain strike and we get an awesome fight. Again Brunswick throws in little bits of comedy that keep the tension light enough to make for a fun read while also keeping the action strong enough to keep me reading and not get bored with it.

I must admit I despised the cliff-hanger, mostly because it makes us think Zoe is dead when we know damn well she’s just fine thanks to the solicits. It’s a dumb cliff-hanger that everyone knows won’t mean anything since Zoe will survive.

Still this issue was a solid read, good dialogue and a fairly enjoyable pace. While not quite as great as this series has been so far, I definitely can say I enjoyed this issue.

Art Comments: Dan McDaid by now has reached a certain level of quality to where he still has some odd moments but by now he fits so well with the comic and captures great emotion along with doing the action well to where I have no real major complaints with his art.

Final Comments: While not quite as good as what I’ve come to expect from this series I still dug this issue of Jersey Gods as it was a fun read that continues to balance action and comedy brilliantly.

The Week Begins - September 3rd 2009

Apologies for the delay on this edition of The Week Begins, I got Arkham Asylum on Sunday and have been having trouble pulling myself away from it. It’s amazing.I am at the final boss as of writing this (needed a break or my head would implode), so my review will be written after I beat it and I’ll write it up then, though I already have points to make both good and bad. All I can say for now is that it’s a phenomenal game.

I also must say that the Disney/Marvel merger just really threw me off. So much that I completely forgot about this edition of The Week Begins. Also I hate to say it but no Month’s or Week’s End in case you couldn’t tell, also no cartoon review though hopefully there should be no obstructions next weekend, Saturday and Sunday where both incredibly busy for me.

One last thing before we move on to the comics, I’m dropping Savage Dragon, Ultimate Comics Avengers and Captain America: Reborn. It’s a thing of cost purely. Also I’m adding Amazing Spider-man (not something I thought I’d ever say) for the month of September to read the rest of Red Headed Stranger and the Black Cat returns arc. That’s it though.

So with all that out of the way, lets move on to the comics!

Jersey Gods #7 *Most Anticipated*
Written: Glen Brunswick
Art: Dan McDaid

Brunswick has been phenomenal on this series for the last 6 issues, I can’t see why the 7th would be any different. Sadly I am worried that with this arc Brunswick has too much on his plate. Zoe going to Neboron and wanting a house, the new band of villain, Barock trying to juggle being a hero and his new job as a fashion model. It’s all a lot and could easily overwhelm him and make the plot slow down and become very disjointed.

Also about Barock as a fashion model. It’s not exactly something you’d expect but I’m not complaining. It’s a rather interesting twist and hey, if anyone can make it work it’s Brunswick.

Ultimate Comics Spider-man #2
Written: Brian Bendis
Art: David Lafuente

I can still taste some leftover haterade from my review of issue #1 last month. I really do want to love this comic like the Ultimate Spider-man I read over the years but sadly it’s just not doing it for me with the first issue. I’m really hopeful that Bendis can clear up some major answers, why is MJ out of the picture, when and why did Peter/Gwen hook up and what the hell happened to the supporting cast. Oh, I guess the whole Mysterio/Shrouded guy plots are interesting too. But I want my side characters!

I really am hopeful that this issue will be a step up from the clueless poor storytelling that Bends gave us last time as last issue was no way to start off a series. Hopefully he can make the frustrations worth my while and make me love Ultimate Spider-man again.

Marvel Zombies Return #1
Written: Fred Van Lente
Art: Nick Dragotta

I am considering not picking this up. While it’s not on the pull list, Marvel Zombies 4 wasn’t on my pull list either but the guys added it since they know I love Marvel Zombies. I’m considering picking up this issue mostly since it stars Spider-man and it’s written by Fred Van Lente.

Marvel Zombies though has burnt me out. It’s like when you go on a roller coaster several times. Sure the first couple of times was exciting but now I’m getting bored and I’d rather go on some other ride. Still if I do or do not pick up this series is all to be determined when I get to the shop. Though with Amazing Spider-man taking a chunk out of my funds, chances are high that I’m going to be collection waiting this.

Now I gotta go, I'm seeing nothing but detective Vision in real life and I think I have to go see my eye doctor...or therapist, whichever can explain this best.

Andrenn's thoughts on Disney buying Marvel

Another thing to add to the list of why I'm so cynical and have no faith in the world. We can put this right between Glen Beck and the Birthers on that list.

On one hand I feel like Marvel sold out. They gave a big middle finger to all their independence and free will and sold all of that away for money. I hate that. I really do. One thing I was happy about Marvel was that they didn't have to answer to any higher power or worry about if the big wigs upstairs cared if they killed a certain person off or not. It gave them a quality that DC could never hope to match as far as what they can and cannot do. Now they've sold that away and it pisses me off.

I do hope that this means Marvel will no longer have to keep rebooting all their damn comics to try and get new readers. Maybe it can even mean that Marvel can do some more adventurous projects without the fear of losing a ton of money. That's about the only plus I can find in this though.

In the long run I still feel pissed off. Like a friend who had been working hard all his life finally gave up and decided to take his parents' check and not have to work hard anymore and just lounge around after all his previous hard work. It's sad to see Marvel get so lost like this and I wouldn't be surprised if we see a major quality drop over the next few years.

Maybe it's just me being a fanboy, but I can't help but wonder if my father would feel the same way. He'd probably be just as pissed and I wouldn't blame him. This feels like a slap in the face to all that Marvel has done over the years and it's a damn shame.

With all that said I'm going to go play Arkham Asylum and pretend that I'm throwing Batarangs into Mickey Mouse's forehead.
